The Swagger of a College Kid

Class has been in sesh for about two weeks now, and I thought you deserved to know what my schedule looks like.

Mondays:

8:30 - Maybe the worst graduate class in the world.

The professor spends the majority of the time joking around with his graduate student broseph. Broseph feels like it is his personal mission to break every silence [and non-silence]  with questions and personal anecdotes and a series of unhilarious jokes. Which compliments the professor's non-stop series of unfunny jokes.

I almost raised my hand and asked them if the professor and his bro would like to continue their conversation after class.

Also, I haven't figured out what this class is about yet.

10:15 - Senior Project

We spend this time talking about how to communicate and talk to companies and not make bumbling fools of ourselves.

I'll be working with a company that makes rotors for airplanes. Also, I found out the president of the company taught my Sunday School Class way back in the day. I, professional as ever, made sure to tell him so, giggle, and shake hands really awkwardly.

12:30 - Self Defense

Learning how to bust up a criminal's nose.

Tuesdays:

11:30 - Something about facilities and planning them.

1:30 - Quality Control.

Someone should have told me when I took statistics a bazillion years ago that it actually mattered for every single other class I have to take ever.

6:00 - Fiction Class

I decided to take a fiction class for fun. Someone asked me why I didn't just decide to read more...

To which I respond, "Because I love the sorts of people that take an undergraduate english class and hearing their suuuuuuper deep insights into Pushkin's short stories."

It's funny because it isn't true.

Wednesdays:

Same as Mondays...except...
1:30 - Canoeing

An eclectic mix of extremely outdoorsy parks-and-tourism students and chacos and patagonia. And then there's the clumsy nerd girl who can't get into the canoe. Can you guess who that is??

Thursdays:

Same as Tuesdays...except...
3:30 - Country Dance

There is an overwhelming amount of cowboy boots and camo in this class. I don't really know what I was expecting out of a class called, "Country Dance." And then there's the clumsy nerd girl who can't turn in the right direction. Can you guess who that is??

One guy finally just picked me up and turned me around.

Fridays:

In theory I would sleep in, as I do not have any classes on Fridays. But I'm spending all my life trying to inject some juice back into our school's manufacturing club.

I won the presidency in a hotly contested race against no one. And this one club takes up more time than all of my classes combined.

So. There's my semester. I decided taking three PE's was a good idea, but now I realized that actually attending 18 hours worth of classes is somewhat of a time-suck.

Oh, hindsight.

What's your schedule look like? Crazy? Fun? Whatever it is, I hope it isn't boring.

The Dictionary is my Bedtime Reading: GRE Update

No joke. It is.

I am learning some intense vocabulary.

Unfortunately, having this arsenal of beautiful words at my disposal is a lot like having a closet full of ballgowns. They're perfect and exactly what I need for this one day, and after that they'll just be ridiculous.

After all, how often can you drop the word pusillanimous in casual conversation?

The World According to a Geek

I think Planet Earth is pretty nice.

Do I think there are improvements that could be made? I sure do.

Dear world [and InterWebs], listen up.

The following needs to happen, like, now.

1. During finals, all restaurants must be open 24/7. When I am busy memorizing 119 different types of welding, or if I'm trying to figure out whether I want to use mesh currents or KCL in my circuit, the last thing I want to eat is some paltry sub from Jimmy John's. No, serious studying requires serious food: An entire cow slapped onto a giant sourdough bun. Thank-you, Mitch's, for your London Broil. Now, have that thing ready for me at 3am...

2. Parking Spaces should be distributed according to GPA. Obviously, distance from the library is inversely related to your average.

Duh.

3. There will always be a really cool marathon on television on Friday nights. Maybe with zombies. There is a  93% guarantee I have nothing going on Friday evening. Saturdays are late enough such that I can study for the next week's tests [I won't, but I have that option] and not be a total dweeb. But I need some help with my Fridays. I will feel less lame about it if I have something ridiculous to watch on television. An America's Next Top Model or Project Runway  marathon would suffice...

4. I want this song to blare down from the heavens every time I walk into a test.

5. For every problem I solve, I want to burn 50 calories. Geeks should be allowed to look good during bathing suit season  too.

6. For every song about breakups and heartache, one song should be written about overcoming the struggles of a geek, such as: papercuts, bad test grades, creepy professors, finding something to do on a Friday night, the fact that Bojangles closes at 10pm during finals, running out of engineering paper, etc. I'm just spitballin' here...

I mean, these are all fairly reasonable...I would go so far as to say intuitive.

RIGHT?

Dressing up as Dr. Dictionary for a "Dress Up Your Counselor" Competition.
Sometimes I wear this outfit to the library.

A picture is worth a gatrillion words.

This.

I love this post by Jon Acuff, of Stuff Christians Like. I have a post I've really been wanting to write for a while, but I've been holding off until I really actually have the time (which isn't right now...thanks, Professor B)

Anyways, if you want something to read, read this.

Today I am thankful for the library. I know that is such a nerdy thing to say, but I remember when I was little, about 7?, I could not wait until I was 12 and could go to the library by myself. I would beg my mom to take me to the library, and I threw a hissy fit if I wasn't promised at least a solid hour. I generally left with about 18 books in multiple "Thank-You" bags [I wish that were an exaggeration, but eighteen is about right]. I think my mom was more embarrassed then proud...hah. And here I am - I am allowed to go the library any time I want. And believe me, I take full advantage. I spend entire nights here, even. Except when you're in college, going to the library doesn't hold quite the same appeal as it did when you were 12. Regardless, I love the library.

IncrediNerd

Hey InterWebs. I know, I was barely out the door, and here I am again, knocking on your door begging you to listen to my stories. While I procrastinate.

I just wanted to share  a little piece of my life with you:  I was sitting in class yesterday listening to my adorable grad student teacher rattle on [she really is adorable - she did her final project on a simulation of the Bojangles here by the school because she hates that she has to wait so long on her cajun filet biscuit. HAH]. However, something started happening, setting off a chain of painful events.
She is speaking, speaking, speaking WAIT...I don't understand. I missed something she said, I don't know what she means....and while I worry about that thing I don't understand, and as I rack my brain grapes trying to figure it out, I'm missing more and more of what she's saying. And then my chest starts to tighten [this really happens]...panic has set in. Breathing is becoming strained...my brain is short circuiting and my chest starts heaving. Suddenly, all these awful emotions start overwhelming me. I feel like I'm about to cry. It's all going to go downhill from here...I won't understand this one thing and before you know it I'll be completely lost and it will be like ST372 all over again. I withhold the tears and then move on to anger. What an awful teacher. How could she be so terrible. Can't breath, tears are welling up, I'm pouting....

OH! Wait, I get it now. I figured it out. So then I scurry ahead and keep working on my notes and the in-class assignment and peek over at the kid next to me to see if she's as far ahead as I am.

Oh. My. Goodness. Have you ever seen such a ridiculous nerd.

Today I am thankful for glasses! I love 'em. These are approximately what my new ones will look like. Nerdy and big, right? Mine will be more of a burgundy. Don't worry InterWebs, I'll show them to you as soon as they get here.

love,
bRob
