Pearls

Postcard from Ashley

The burden of suffering seems a tombstone hung about our necks, while in reality, it is the weight which is necessary to keep down the diver while he is hunting for pearls.

  1. If these divers are human beings, they generally have to come up for air at some point… what good are metaphorical pearls if you are metaphorically suffocated ???

  2. the diver's scuba tank and wet suit are on the other side of the postcard; silly me, I forgot to include that picture.

  3. (is there actually a diver on the other side?) Scuba tanks will run out of air… i guess at some point in the future we’ll have a power source powerful enough, but light enough, to recycle the CO2 to O2 indefinitely. But then you’d need somewhere to store the carbon. And you’d eventually get hungry and thirsty and have to use the bathroom (although you could probably use the bathroom while diving if you REALLY had to…).

Plus, Jean Paul didn’t know anything about SCUBA gear. Maybe he was saying if you happen to have a weight around your neck, jump into the ocean and find some pearls until you need to breathe again, then take the weight off and enjoy your pearls (or at least enjoy not suffocating if you are no good at finding pearls)?

In any case, there’s no sustainable way to keep a weight around your neck for too long, pearl diving or otherwise :-)
